Recently, Walter Sisulu Local Municipality (WSLM) held its Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and Budget Representative Forum engagement in Burgersdorp, providing residents and stakeholders with an opportunity to share their priorities, concerns and proposals regarding the development of their communities and the improvement of service delivery.
The IDP is a key planning instrument that guides the municipality’s development priorities and service delivery programmes. Through the IDP process, the municipality identifies the needs of communities and considers them in its plans and programmes, taking available resources into account. The Budget Representative Forum provides a further opportunity for the municipality to engage with communities and stakeholders on financial planning and budget priorities.
These engagements promote transparency, accountability and meaningful public participation in decisions that affect residents. During the engagement, community members were encouraged to raise issues affecting their respective areas and provide suggestions on how service delivery can be improved. Matters relating to infrastructure, basic services, roads, community development, local economic development and other municipal priorities formed part of the broader discussions.
The forum was attended by representatives from Joe Gqabi District Municipality, the South African Police Service (SAPS), Ward Councillors, the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), the Department of Human Settlements, the Department of Home Affairs, the Department of Basic Education and the Department of Transport, among others.
By creating opportunities for residents to engage directly with municipal representatives, these engagements contribute towards building stronger relationships between the municipality and the communities it serves. Community participation remains an essential component of effective local government. The views and priorities raised during these engagements will contribute to the municipality’s planning processes and assist in shaping programmes and projects for the coming financial period.
“WSLM encourages residents, community organisations and all stakeholders to remain actively involved in municipal public participation programmes. Meaningful participation strengthens the relationship between the municipality and its communities and allows residents to contribute to discussions and decisions that affect their lives.
“We remain committed to accountability and transparency, while ensuring that our communities have a meaningful voice in shaping the future of the municipality. Through working together, we can contribute towards sustainable development, improved service delivery and better living conditions across Walter Sisulu Local Municipality,” said Mayor Cllr Vania Davids.
