The long-anticipated Steynsburg 220 Housing Project, implemented by the Department of Human Settlements in partnership with the Walter Sisulu Local Municipality (WSLM), has reached a significant milestone as it enters its final phase of development. This project, which has been rolled out over several years, continues to bring hope and improved living conditions to the community of Steynsburg.

The project was carefully structured in phases to ensure effective delivery. The first phase saw the successful completion of 75 housing units, providing dignified shelter to beneficiary families. The second phase focused on the servicing of 160 sites, with 145 houses planned for construction under this phase.

Today, 21 April 2026, marks a major step forward as the project progresses towards achieving its full target of 220 housing units. The final phase includes the construction of the remaining 45 houses. This follows the appointment and official handover of a contractor responsible for building 100 housing units, who has already established the site.

Site establishment is expected to be completed by the end of April 2026, with construction set to officially commence on 1 May 2026.

Mayor Cllr Vania Davids welcomed the progress, highlighting the municipality’s commitment to improving the lives of residents through sustainable human settlements.

“This milestone represents more than just infrastructure delivery - it restores dignity and brings hope to our people. As a municipality, we remain committed to working with our partners to ensure that our communities have access to safe and adequate housing,” said Mayor Cllr Vania Davids.

Director for Planning and Economic Development, Masonwabe Tikana, emphasized the broader socio-economic impact of the project, particularly in relation to local economic development.

“Beyond addressing housing needs, this project plays a critical role in stimulating the local economy. It creates opportunities for SMMEs and provides much-needed employment for local labour. We will continue to ensure that these opportunities are communicated transparently through the Project Steering Committee processes,” said Mr Masonwabe Tikana.

The municipality has confirmed that SMME and labour opportunities linked to the project will be communicated in due course, as part of ongoing engagements through Project Steering Committee (PSC) meetings.

As the final phase gets underway, the Steynsburg 220 Housing Project stands as a testament to the power of collaboration in delivering sustainable development and improving the quality of life for residents.
