The Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT), in partnership with Walter Sisulu Local Municipality (WSLM), held an information session aimed at guiding informal business owners through the application process for a provincial informal business support funding programme. The session sought to equip prospective applicants with the necessary information to understand the fund, complete the application forms correctly and meet the relevant requirements before the closing date.
Nomgqibelo Mehlomakhulu from DEDEAT outlined the purpose of the engagement, explaining that the fund is a provincial initiative with a total allocation of R2 million. She highlighted that the funding is competitive and allocated across districts, meaning that applicants will compete for the available financial support. Eligible informal business owners stand a chance of receiving R50,000 in funding to support their businesses. The initiative presents an opportunity for informal traders and entrepreneurs to access financial assistance that could contribute to business growth and sustainability.
During the session, Nthabeleng Rankeke took participants through the application form, providing practical guidance on how to complete the different sections and explaining the importance of submitting accurate and complete information. Given the competitive nature of the fund, the Department emphasized the importance of ensuring that prospective applicants understand the process and eligibility criteria. The information session was intended to give interested business owners a fair opportunity to familiarise themselves with the requirements and prepare applications that meet the prescribed conditions.
Mr Sandt from the municipality's LED Unit facilitated the session, encouraging participation and providing business owners with an opportunity to ask questions and seek clarity on matters relating to the application process. This interactive engagement enabled participants to address their concerns and gain a clearer understanding of what is expected of them.
With the closing date set for 30 October 2026, informal business owners were encouraged to submit their applications well in advance of the deadline. Early submission is important as it allows applicants sufficient time to approach the Department for assistance should they encounter errors or require clarification when completing their forms. Through this collaborative initiative, DEDEAT and Walter Sisulu Local Municipality reaffirm their commitment to promoting access to economic opportunities and supporting the development of informal businesses. By providing guidance on available funding and the application process, the initiative aims to help entrepreneurs navigate the requirements and position themselves to compete for financial support.
