In a decisive step toward addressing South Africa’s unemployment challenge, the Walter Sisulu Local Municipality has successfully launched a Learnership and Skills Development Programme aimed at empowering 300 unemployed youth across its jurisdiction. This initiative, driven by the municipality’s Skills Development Unit, is the result of a strategic partnership with OTAP and is proudly funded by the National Skills Fund. The programme has now come to fruition following a rigorous application process, with beneficiaries drawn from all five towns within the municipality, including Maletswai (Aliwal North), Burgersdorp, Jamestown, Venterstad, and Steynsburg. Induction for the Maletswai cohort has already been successfully completed, marking the official commencement of a journey toward sustainable livelihoods and economic inclusion.

Welcoming the participants, Mayor Vania Davids expressed strong optimism about the programme’s impact, describing it as more than just training but a pathway to restoring dignity and hope among young people. She emphasized that the municipality remains committed to confronting youth unemployment through meaningful partnerships and targeted interventions that yield tangible outcomes. Mayor Davids encouraged beneficiaries to seize the opportunity with determination, noting that the programme represents a critical investment in their future and the broader development of local communities.

The Municipal Council and administrative management have collectively endorsed the programme, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening institutional support for skills development and youth empowerment initiatives. Classes are scheduled to officially commence on Tuesday, 02 May 2026, with sessions taking place at designated local venues in the municipality, including Burgersdorp Thembeni Seconary School and Maletswai Conference Cente.
