Council Policy Workshop

Municipal policies play a pivotal role in shaping the well-being of communities. To ensure that councillors are well-equipped to navigate the complexities of these policies, a workshop was recently initiated, aiming to empower councillors with the knowledge needed to assist make informed decisions for the betterment of their constituencies. 

Walter Sisulu Local Municipality (WSLM) Speaker, Cllr Mathetha welcomed councillors to the workshop, he highlighted that the session was to be abreast with municipal policies, noting that the review is still to come if there are matters that need revaluation from the standing policies. He further emphasised that local government, as the most regulated sphere, it is important to understand the laws that guide its mandate.

Municipal policies encompass a wide range of regulations and guidelines that govern the functioning of local governments. These policies touch upon critical aspects such as urban planning, public services, budget allocation, and community development. It is essential for councillors to have a deep understanding of these policies to effectively contribute to the development and progress of their municipalities.

Corporate Services department, director, Rene Godsson began the workshop by outlining the itinerary of the two day session, thereafter Human Resources manager, Sipho Sontashe commenced the presentations with Corporate Services policies including task job evaluation, dress code as well as appointment of an acting Municipal Manager, amongst others. Council engaged in the intricacies of each policy, ascertaining honesty and clarity.

At the forefront of the workshop was employee affairs as well as community interest therefore the second day was largely focused on Financial, Community and Technical services which dealt with matters of supply chain, asset management as well as indigent issues. Credit was given to the respective units as well important discrepancies were realised.

As the councillors emerge from this workshops, they carry with them the tools needed to shape a brighter and more prosperous future for their municipalities.
